In September 1875, the famous Arctic explorer and naval officer Karl Weyprecht addressed a meeting of scientists and physicians. He reported the basic principles of Arctic research and suggested that fixed Arctic observation stations should be established. He pleaded for international cooperation in scientific polar exploration and paved the way for the organisation of the first International Polar Year (IPY).

Thousands of researchers followed in his footsteps. Among them a fair share of Dutch researchers. The Netherlands has been very active in the framework of the IPY. During the forth IPY edition, Dutch colleagues coordinated 6 of the 228 IPY projects, and have been active in no less than 54 projects!

At the Netherlands Polar Symposium 2009 the researchers will seize the opportunity to share their findings with fellow researchers. Our program for 5 & 6 March will showcase the Dutch enthusiasm for Polar research:

The Netherlands Polar symposium will be followed by a spectacular event for the general public - ‘Pool belevenis 2009’ - to be held on 6 & 7 March in Middelburg. For full program details check: www.poolbelevenis.nl
